Spring Play 2010 - "Moon Over Buffalo"

Ken Ludwig's high energy romp Moon Over Buffalo was our 2010 Spring play and was presented in the WGHS Little Theater in March.
The production was directed by Mr. Schaefer, Stage managed by Laura Mitchler and assistant SM'd by Maggie Mohr.

This amazing show was given a three night run...wish we could have performed more!

The cast and crew of Moon Over Buffalo

The department had a lot of fun with this production. The script is very funny and the cast immediately fell in love with the wacky energy of the story. We had the opportunity to play a broader comedy and the students got the opportunity to play in a period piece. A lot of the references were new to us and the research for this show proved to be very beneficial in creating a representation of the time (the 1950's)

Setting
Basement and backstage of the Erlanger Theater
Buffalo, New York - 1953

Act I - The morning

Act II - Scene 1 – Early that afternoon
Scene 2 - The matinee of “Private Lives”
Scene 3 - Later that afternoon

We had open auditions and once the cast was selected went into rehearsal for almost two months, and the technical theatre classes began to build the set.

The script was very specific (as with most farces) on how the stage was to be layed out for the action. We followed the directions for the most part and added some details of our own. My favorite being the dartbaord image of Greer Garson hanging on the supply cabinet and the detailing of the set. It really felt like a basement green room of an old theater when we got done.

Thanks to everyone who helped create this very detailed world for the actors to play on!

This show offered a lot of technical and acting challenges, and we had some freshman in leads and some actors new to the stage. It was a real training ground kinda show.

Not only was this a period piece, we also had to make sure we pulled off several fast-paced comedic moments.

  • "Scooby-Doo" like chase scenes all over the set.
  • Fake noses!
  • Hats, hats and more hats!!!
  • Sword fighting!
  • Newpaper beatings!
  • Doors slamming!
  • Prat falls!
  • Wigs!
  • Playing drunk...while reciting shakespeare!
  • Lots of "old age" make-up (done by Mr. Schaefer each night)
  • Plays within plays!
  • Guns being shot, and plates falling off walls!
  • period costumes from Robert Schmidt Costumes!
(*not to mention one of our actors breaking his arm the night before we opened!!!)

Directors Notes
(from the program)

This play is about life, or maybe just life in the theater. Who really knows? Just when you think you have it all together, it can just turn around and bite you right in the rear…and we all know “the show must still go on!” This wacky family shows us how to roll with punches, the gags, the bad hearing, the guns, the lies, the weather and the bad backs… and how to find a way to make it all work. It doesn’t always work out great, but in a good farce it’ll always work out in the end. (and hopefully with some good laughs all the way through)
I have been incredibly fortunate to work on this show and to have the wonderful opportunity to work with such a fun group of kids. The cast and all of the crews on this production worked really hard. I have admired their drive and dedication to the project from day one…don’t get me wrong, we are all completely crazy (not Laura of course…she’s the sane one), but we each held our own, we got our jobs done by the deadline and the show has really come together in the end. I am so thrilled to finally put the brush down. Enjoy!

The nice and neat wrap-up to the plot..

Special Thanks
We would like to thank the following people for their unending support and dedication to this production.
Mrs. Genovese for all the extra work she puts into the special T-shirts she makes for us, Dr. Clark for his available ear and for putting his heart in the Drama Department at this school, Mrs. Romanowski for being the “Mom” to so many kids and helping out with our tix, to Mrs. Cashel for making time for our crazy requests and never once kicking us to the curb, to all the parents for putting up with our sometimes erratic schedule, to Colin and Mr. Phil Croy for getting our light board fixed, and finally to our ring leader Miss Laura Mitchler who somehow held this ship together and who’s mad skills for stage management always kept us all on task (you will be missed).

CHEERS!
